This week we re-test the stopping power of the .32 ACP cartridge through the .32 ACP Beretta 3032 Tomcat. The muzzle velocity of the projectile and its penetration into the gel block was disappointing. Our viewers rightly pointed out that this was likely due to the firearm we used. Whi...

Some of the history is written up in one of Jeff Cooper's books including experiments using custom cylinders in Colt SAA, .45Colt cartridge cases, and loads using multiple powders at the same time.

I’ve always loved .45 LC and .454 Casull. One of my favorite revolvers still to this day is my S&W Model 25 and I’ve been hand loading “+P” loads for it for quite some time. Then I found the .454 Casull and really was able to get crazy with my hand loads. Personally I feel that full house .454 doesn’t feel much different than shooting hot .44 mag but with much better ballistics.

.45Colt is certainly a good cartridge, especially when loaded for a strong revolver such as the larger framed Rugers. 454 took this to another level, then 460 took that to another level.

I would agree whole heartedly with the .44 magnum comparison! During this demonstration the two recoil impulses were relatively the same in my opinion. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment!

I remember when a five shot SA revolver in .454 Casull was considered THE ultimate handgun for folks who spent a lot of time in the wilderness. IIRC Ruger was the only manufacturer who made one as regular (but limited) production.

    • @AmmoMart

It would in my mind still be an excellent choice! It really does not recoil a ton more than the .44 magnum and has more knockdown. I think the revolvers available in .454 are a bit more unwieldy due to their overall relative size, but if that is not an issue, she is still a remarkable handgun round for sure. Thanks for your view and leaving a comment.

Thanks for being the only channel that addressed the 327’s significant recoil. Although it is true that comparing to a snub nose 357, it is less, that doesn’t mean significantly less. I think it might be educational if we compared stopping power of the 327 to a modern 38 special +P. (My Colt Cobra is comparable to my Ruger 327, in size and weight, and gives me 6 rounds of +P). Too bad H&R didn’t go just a tad hotter back in the 1980’s when they introduced their magnum. Seems like a case of underkill v overkill…

I have been looking for H&R 32 magnum ammo, and it is close to impossible to find. Surprisingly, 32 Smith and Wesson Long is easily to find and 327 Federal is not hard to find. Maybe with the new Smith and Wesson revolver in 32 H&R Magnum, those rounds will become easier to find.

It's no longer a cold start drill after the first draw. Great drill for marksmanship, but not the most realistic for defensive shooting as statistically you'll be from 3-5 yards. Good shooting tho'.

I've got a legacy p229 in 40 and carry it everyday. Is it the most concealable? Maybe not as good as some but I dress for it and it is a extremely comfortable and accurate pistol to shoot. I think hes right. Shoot enough and it's not at all hard to shoot well

The problem with open hollow points in 380 is that it’s too slow so the hole gets clogged up with clothing and fails to expand in every shot! U have to be guessing how many rounds are going to expand because not all of them expand while going through clothing. Specially heavy clothing. That’s the reason I recommend Hornady Critical Defense, that bullet will expand in every shot because of the red plug. Do ur research guys and chose accordingly fellas!

Do with this what you will: the commonly recommended .32 defensive loadings are the hot-loaded European FMJ rounds, the 73gr Fiocci and the 73gr S&B rounds. These rounds are hotter than the PMC you fired, and they feature a beveled rim and long OAL to prevent rim-lock and improve reliability in autos. THOSE are the rounds to put to the test in a gel block, not the PMC target ammo. Expansion is pretty much a non-starter in .32 from what I've seen - using hot Euro rounds improves reliability and penetration in this little caliber.

My first revolver was a 44 Magnum. I primarily used 240 grain loads. That is my favorite caliber. So, for me, 357 Magnum isn't going to give me any surprises. 44 Magnum is just a little too big for carry. At least for now.

When reliability and ease of carry trump all other factors, the little .38 will always have a place. Shooting the ballistic equivalent of the old fashioned Treasury load and FBI load is going to hurt, but not as much as it hurts at the other end. In bear cub season, you'll want to hike with a more powerful round, but there are even Scandium .45 these days and depending on how you dress, this could work.

I am from the UK. When the .22 came on the scene in the turn of the 20th century, a lot of British black powder 300 calibre "rook rifles" where tubed by Parker Hale of Birmingham and converted. My father shot all his life with a beautiful little Franchoti 300 ex BP rook rifle in Martini action that he had converted by Parker Hale to 22. Only problem was he kept the original barrel length of about 27 inches and it was fine for .22 Short and Long but when LR came along the barrel would visibly "whip" as the bullet passed down the delicate thin barrel, quite alarmingly when watching from the side! He always preferred to use .22 Short, but I could not persuade him to cut a foot off the barrel which would have sorted the problem. Don't know about the US ammo situation, but over here you could still buy .22 short right up to around 2012 and I used to use it sometimes in my Winchester 94 .22 lever action. Short is unavailable in the UK now. Currently, I hunt squirrels with a Ruger Custom Shop Competition and a Browning Buckmark with a cut down 12 inch barrel which is legal here. Both have moderators which are almost mandatory in the UK as we are so polite that we don't want to upset the neighbours, obviously! That said my Marlin 45/70 BLG doesn't actually have one, although to keep the Police happy, I did apply for on on my certificate!

I have a Ruger LCP MAX that I carry when I must be absolutely sure that no one finds out that I’m armed. I have no doubt that the .380 would be sufficient, should I find myself in an unfortunate situation. I’m very happy that you mentioned the recoil of the .380. I always hear people talking about how the cartridge has very light recoil, etc. My LCP MAX is snappy as hell. It’s my least favorite to practice with.

My (concealed) EDC is a Glock 42 (.380), but my home defense weapons are a Walter PPQ .45 and an AK SBR. Both house-guns are equipped with light/laser combos. Seems that most civilian gun-owners reject the laser in favor of the red dot. I have one of those (Holosun) on an AR pistol chambered in .45, but the mount’s screws got loose after my 1st test-firing at the range. I’ll eventually get around to applying lock-tight to it, perhaps after I retire next year. Anyway, just some gun-nut rambling from an older guy, lol.
